There are many different types of chiropractors.  There are different styles and techniques taught at chiropractic schools.  Most of these techniques involve correcting misalignments in the spine utilizing manual adjustments, instrument adjustments, or drop table adjustments.  Some techniques use aggressive manual manipulations and other use very light touch.  There is a growing body of scientific research that suggests that they all work on some level.  Most chiropractic schools focus on musculoskeletal disorders while maintaining holistic practices.  The chiropractor is educated in helping a person to become healthier without the use of drugs or surgery.  Nutrition is part of every chiropractic schools curriculum and chiropractors are tested on this to become licensed.  Government studies have shown that and most cost efficient form of treatment for low back pain is chiropractic care.

There has been a recent push by chiropractors to practice evidence based chiropractic.  The goal here is to eliminate older techniques that have no merit and uses only techniques and protocols that are supported by rigorous study.  The leader in this movement has been a technique called Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP).  CBP has published more studies in peer reviewed journals than any other technique in the history of the profession.  CBP philosophy is that there are statistical models of the spine that tell us exactly how the spine should be aligned.  It is similar to blood pressure and body temperature.  We know what the curves of the spine should look like and if a patients spine doesn’t look this way then it isn’t normal.  CBP has designed a system to correct these structural problems.  In addition to structural corrections most chiropractors attempt to make functional corrections as well.  Once the spine is aligned correctly the muscles connected to them and surrounding them need to be functioning correctly.  The use of advanced exercise techniques are used to restore a body to it’s fullest potential.  Most chiropractors work very closely with other healthcare providers.  In today’s day and age physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists regularly refer to CBP doctors.  Physical therapist work very closely with chiropractors as well.  It is not unusual for chiropractors to work with other alternative healthcare providers as well.  Acupuncture, massage therapy, and yoga are all great complimentary therapies to the chiropractic treatment.
